Surprise! (or not…)

If you have been following me on Twitter, you likely know from my responses that I am heading to #FinCon17 in Dallas, TX next week.

FinCon is a financial content and media conference founded by personal finance’s very own PT  from PTMoney.  The conference focuses on topics relevant to personal finance bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, platforms, authors, and FinTech companies.

Why am I Going to #FinCon17?

Big sky, but not Texas…

I heard about FinCon a few years ago from a personal finance podcast.  It sounded like an incredible way for bloggers and other personal finance content creators to collaborate and connect.  But as a pre-blogger, I did not have a compelling reason to attend.

Well, that changed!

Mr. Adventure Rich and I started this blog on May 15, 2017.  This launched us into the personal finance community as active members (vs. the readers/followers we had been for years!).  Suddenly, the prospect of connecting with our “blog friends” in person and learning from some of the top talent in the personal finance world became much more appealing!

How am I Making it Work?

Someone thinks he can hitch a ride to Dallas…

I’ll be honest, I did not think I would be able to attend FinCon this year.  While the conference is not crazy expensive in terms of conferences (I have been to work-related conferences that cost $1,500!), I just wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to swing it.

But, being me, I started researching and found out about the FinCon Scholarship offered to new bloggers and content creators.  I submitted my application and was thrilled to find out I was accepted as a 2017 FinCon Scholar!

From there, I realized that we had piled up enough Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the Chase Sapphire Preferred card to bring my airfare costs to cover a majority of my plane ticket.  This along with the fact that I need to use up some of my PTO before the end of the year pushed me over the edge… so I signed up!

Unfortunately, due to work schedules and the toddler, Mr. Adventure Rich will not be joining me this year.  We are already trying to stash some cash so we both can attend next year 🙂

What do I hope to get out of FinCon17?

Community and Connections

The personal finance community has been incredibly welcoming as I stumble along… trying to figure out how to blog, learning how to post a tweet (yep, no twitter pre-blog), and find my “voice”.  I have “met” many incredible people (both bloggers and readers) over the past few months.

I even had the opportunity to meet a few folks in person including Joe Saul-Sehy from Stacking Benjamins, Fritz from Retirement Manifesto, and a local blog reader (hi Meghan 🙂 )!

FinCon17 is an incredible opportunity for me to deepen the connections formed online and through the blog.  I love the interactions I have had through the blog and social media… but I’m craving a “cup of coffee” conversation or two 😉

Plus, being anonymous, it will be fun to see people’s reaction to seeing the “real me”!

Five months in and I feel like I am still working on pre-reqs and not quite ready for “Blogging 101”!  FinCon is an opportunity for me to expand my skill set and learn from some of the greatest influencers in the personal finance world.

Bring on the learning!

In my personal, academic and work life, those cups of coffee conversations I mentioned above often lead to a deeper connection and future collaboration.  Even something as simple as bouncing post or blog direction ideas off fellow bloggers could provide me with insight I would not have discovered on my own.

In Dallas?  Come to “Your Money Live!”

Listen up, this is awesome!  The FinCon team is opening up an entire afternoon of kickass content to the public on Friday, October 27 from 1 pm to 6 pm.  The event is called “Your Money Live!” (link takes you to more info + tickets!) and treats attendees to sessions with Farnoosh Tarobi (check out my review of her podcast!), David Bach, Lynnette Khalfani-Cox and others.

Your Money Live! is a great opportunity to reap the benefits of learning from some amazing speakers without the time and financial commitment of the whole conference.  I hope to see you there!

Not Able to Attend- Try a Virtual Pass!

If you are not able to attend #FinCon17, the FinCon team created a FinCon Virtual Pass just for you!  The Virtual Pass grants you access to recorded content from the sessions at FinCon so that you can take advantage of the knowledge share!

Going to #FinCon17?  Let me know!

Are you going to #FinCon17?  Let me know!  I look forward to meeting you and saying hi 🙂

I will be the short-ish brunette Michigander who can’t stop smiling (really specific, I know…).

Always an Adventure,

Mrs. Adventure Rich
